Modalpartikeln im Alltag

Modal particles do not change the basic facts of a sentence. They add attitude, shared knowledge, friendliness, surprise, or emphasis, especially in spoken German.

Common mistakes
Do not translate every modal particle with one fixed English word.
Use them mainly where the conversational context supports the tone.
Do not overuse them in a formal written text.
What to remember
Denn, eigentlich, doch, mal, and ja add conversational tone. They are understood through context more than through literal translation.
