Ausdrücke mit es

es tek bir kuralla açıklanamaz. Bir nesnenin yerine geçebilir, hava ve zaman ifadelerinde zorunlu olabilir ya da öznesiz bir Pasiv cümlede yer tutucu olarak kullanılabilir. Önce hangi görevi üstlendiğini bulmak en güvenli yoldur.

The German word es has several jobs: it can replace a neuter noun, occur in weather and time expressions, belong to fixed phrases, or act as a placeholder in impersonal passive sentences.

What you will learn

Three clear goals

  1. 01Separate the main uses of es.
  2. 02Use common fixed expressions.
  3. 03Recognise when impersonal passive can omit es.

Where es is used

Common es patterns
FunctionPatternExample
Fixed expressionEs ist + adjective + zu / dassEs ist wichtig, pünktlich zu sein.
Pronounes = neuter nounDas Buch? Ich habe es gelesen.
Weather / timeEs regnet. / Es ist Abend.Es hat gestern geschneit.
Fixed phraseEs gibt / Es geht umEs gibt heute einen Termin.
Impersonal passiveEs wird + Partizip IIEs wird getanzt.

At the beginning, es can fill the subject position. When another element comes first, es is usually dropped. It does not refer to a particular person or thing.

In short

What to remember

Check what es does in the sentence: pronoun, weather/time word, fixed phrase, or a placeholder. Its meaning is not always the same.
