Relative clauses
Use a relative clause to add information about a noun. The relative pronoun agrees in gender and number with the noun and takes its case from the clause.
What you will learn
Three clear goals
- 01Use der/die/das forms
- 02Choose case from the relative clause
- 03Use commas and verb-final order
Examples
Das ist der Beruf, der zu mir passt.
This is the job that suits me.
Das ist der Beruf, den ich mag.
This is the job that I like.
Die Frau, der ich helfe, ist meine Nachbarin.
The woman whom I am helping is my neighbour.
Common mistakes
Choose case from the relative clause, not the main clause.
Use a comma before the relative clause.
Put the conjugated verb at the end.
What to remember
Relative clauses add information and use a pronoun whose case depends on its role inside the clause.
German vs English
- German pattern
- Das ist der Beruf, den ich mag.
- Closest English idea
- This is the job that I like.
