Bir düşünceyi, umudu veya değerlendirmeyi tam bir yan cümleyle aktarmak için dass kullanırız. dass yan cümlesinde özne ve diğer ögelerden sonra çekimli fiil sona gider; ana cümle ile yan cümle virgülle ayrılır.

Hauptsatz, dass + Özne + … + Verbdass ile başlayan yan cümlede çekimli fiil en sona gider. Birden fazla fiil varsa çekimli yardımcı veya modal fiil de yan cümle yapısına göre sonda yer alır: Ich hoffe, dass du kommen kannst.
