Common mistakes
Do not confuse formal Sie with informal sie.
Use the plural verb form with formal Sie: Sie sind, Sie haben.
Do not assume every workplace uses the same form; follow the local relationship.
What to remember
Choose du for closeness and Sie for formality. The formal pronoun is capitalized and takes plural verb forms.
German vs English
- German pattern
- du and Sie encode social distance and politeness.
- Closest English idea
- English normally uses one ‘you’ for both informal and formal situations.
- Key difference
- English lacks a grammatical formal-you distinction, so politeness is expressed through wording and context.
